Mining Accident

Mining Accident
Notable Safety Tips

Working in mining is risky business. Earlier this year, a man was killed in an accident at a copper mine in Australia. Another accident at a coal mine in southwest China claimed 22 lives. In fact, China has some of the most dangerous mines in the world, and authorities have scrambled to try to enforce safety rules. If you’re considering a career in mining, it is crucial that you take the following safety measures to keep your time in the mines as trouble-free as possible.

1. Don't Ignore the Danger

The first step toward keeping yourself safe is to be cognizant of the fact that working in mining is hazardous. Accept that the mining industry is inherently filled with danger and stay alert every moment on the job. Watch out for your colleagues as well and never let your guard down. Accidents with major impact can occur in a moment of carelessness.

2. Dangerous Tasks Require Planning and Communication

When planning tasks, don’t think only of completing them as efficiently as possible. Allot extra time and money for safety requirements. Never compromise the safety of your employees when trying to meet deadlines or to boost the quality of work. All risks should be assessed, including the possibility of accidents. Try to eliminate risks as much as possible. Where a risk still exists, provide your team with clear instructions and educate them on how to mitigate it. If necessary, deal with the danger should it arise.

3. Get Professional Training

All team members should undergo regular safety training. This should not just apply to new team members. Even long-standing employees should be made to attend refresher courses. Safety training sessions that contain theory and practical components can be very helpful. Workers who take on strenuous roles may be sent for health and fitness checks to determine whether they are able to take on the physical demands of their work.

4. Always Wear Safety Equipment

There is a litany of safety equipmentthat mining workers use for their protection, from helmets to safety glassesand gloves. It is essential that all workers wear the necessary safety equipment at all times. There have been countless stories of workers being saved by helmets, for example.

5. Supervise Your Team

All team members should follow safety instructions with no exceptions. A supervisor must also be diligent about following up and enforcing the rules. Never allow more people to enter a site than are allowed. Supervisors also need to know the whereabouts of all team members throughout each shift. Likewise, all workers should be kept informed about what their fellow team members are doing throughout the day. Never allow any team members to breach the safety rules without a warning or, in the case of repeated disobedience, appropriate consequences.

6. Document Your Safety Procedures

When accidents happen, all team members should know exactly what to do. Safety procedures must be clearly defined. When documenting the safety procedures, describe the various incidents that might occur, what needs to be done and whom to contact. Safety procedures should be displayed prominently in locations that can be easily accessed by team members.

7. Follow the Latest Safety Standards

Ensure all safety equipment is serviced regularly and satisfies all the latest safety standards. Never try to save on safety equipment. If an item no longer complies with the current safety standards, replace it, even if this means increasing expenses or delaying a project. Never allow staff to use outdated safety equipment, even for a short period of time.
The number of safety-related incidents in the mining industry is high. Unfortunately, some of the tragedies that have occurred could have been prevented. Don’t repeat the mistakes that have been made by others. While the risks can never be eliminated completely, following the above tips can help significantly.

Staying Safe (Covid 19)

These materials are regularly updated based on new scientific findings as the epidemic evolves. Last updated 31 March 2020

Basic protective measures against the new coronavirus

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

Wash your hands frequently

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider

Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

Pelosi vows to fight Trump’s ‘dangerous, illegal’ WHO funding cut

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Democrats will “swiftly” challenge what she called President Trump’s “senseless” and “illegal” suspension of US funding to the World Health OrganizatioTrump stopped the funding on Tuesday, saying the WHO needs “meaningful reforms” after failing to report accurate coronavirus data from China, worsening the pandemic’s punch to the US.
But Pelosi said Wednesday the United Nations body is essential to battling COVID-19.

“This is another case, as I have said, of the President’s ineffective response, that ‘a weak person, a poor leader, takes no responsibility. A weak person blames others,’” Pelosi said in a statement
Pelosi (D-Calif.) did not say how Democrats would fight the suspension of funds, but said, “This decision is dangerous, illegal and will be swiftly challenged.”
“We can only be successful in defeating this global pandemic through a coordinated international response with respect for science and data,.” Pelosi said. “But sadly, as he has since Day One, the President is ignoring global health experts, disregarding science and undermining the heroes fighting on the frontline, at great risk to the lives and livelihoods of Americans and people around the world.”
Trump said Tuesday night in the White House Rose Garden that the WHO failed to warn the world about the highly contagious virus. China notified the WHO on Dec. 31 of the coronavirus outbreak, but allegedly hid data.
“The WHO’s reliance on China’s disclosures likely caused a 20-fold increase in cases worldwide, and it may be much more than that,” Trump said.

Dear Federal Government

😑Dear *FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA*πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬

Please with all due respect and humility, I cry out most especially for the *"weak & voiceless"* citizens of Nigeria.
Please stop treating your own brothers & sisters like *"animals"*.

Hate speech or no hate speech law my foot.

Do you expect us to die in silence & unnecessary oppression?

If we must emulate the same measures of *"STAY HOME, STAY SAFE"* just like the other countries of the world, please let's emulate it in total completion.

*✔️Before the United States declared a national lockdown, they gave all their citizens $1000 (One thousand dollars) each, & made sure everyone had food at home to eat.*

*✔️Canada distributed money & enough food items to all her citizens & also cancelled all rents & bills payment till further notice.*

*✔️President Putin of Russia since lockdown had made sure that every citizen is supplied with food from house to house, plus other financial benefits too.*

*✔️Spain, Italy, France & all other European nations too have all followed the same measures.*

*✔️Most of all the affected nations here in Africa, have all done the same before declaring a "lockdown", making sure their citizens are truly indoors, safe from the spread of the virus & also safe from hunger.*

As a matter of fact, *Tanzania's President was part of the movement from house to house, sharing food & relief materials for the citizens*.
He was also seen some days ago inside the forest, fasting & praying for his dear country.

*Nigeria*, being a senior brother as far as Africa is concerned, *what have you done for your citizens apart from announcing number of cases on a daily basis & creating fear in the minds of your people?*
You're telling us to stay at home for fourteen *(14)* good days without providing us with common stipends, food or relief materials? *What a pity. Do you expect us to eat SAND & STONES?*
*Even ordinary nose covers & hand sanitizers as cheap as those ones are, we didn't see..*

*Please hear this dear leaders..*
That your "STAY HOME, STAY SAFE" slogan only *works for the rich who are capable to stock their stores with food stuffs that can sustain them till year 2022.* It does not work for the poor at all. *For the poor, it is "STAY HOME, STAY HUNGRY".*
In case you never knew or perhaps have forgotten, most people in Nigeria eat from *hand to mouth* (daily hustle). Some don't even have a bank account due to the fact that their daily consumptions are more than their daily income.
Do you want us all to die of hunger? *How would it sound if it is said that other nations are fighting to contain covid-19 virus, while Nigeria is fighting to contain hunger*, despite the level of wealth we've been blessed with as a nation, & all the billions that has been donated by various philanthropists?
*It would sound so ridiculous & shameful right?*

So please, just like what other nations have done for their citizens, please do the same. Stop treating us like "guinea pigs", we are not. The life of every Nigerian counts, & so should be valued.

*If you really want us to STAY AT HOME, then do the needful.*

*Print more money at CBN, send stipends to every Nigerian via our bank accounts, or what is the value of our BVN numbers?*

Also, distribute food stuffs & relief items to the poor masses in every neighbourhood, or is it only during election campaigns that you know how to disturb our neighbourhoods with your noises?

*Please, this is my little advice, because HUNGER is even capable to do more havoc than coronavirus.*

We *Nigerians* are known for our strength & resilience by nature. We can even endure a national lockdown for two years, if only food supply is made available.

*"Let's count our teeth with our tongue please."*

*God bless Nigeria πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬, We shall conquer.. This season too shall surely pass.*
